a three part series in musical assholery

2/12/2006

i am in an enormous bookstore in tower city with my roommate julie, who loves the smashing pumpkins. i notice that the elevator music is "porcelina".
"hey julie," i say, "the smashing pumpkins!"
"oh yeah," she says, not having noticed.
the next song is off billy corgan's solo CD.
"hey julie," i say, "it's BC!"
"wow," she says, surprised pleasantly.
after that, amazingly, comes yet another smashing pumpkins song, this time from machina.
"hey julie," i say, "the smashing pumpkins!"
"this is true," she says, beginning to be annoyed that i am still pointing this out.
this continues for 3 more songs (two SP and a zwan). i do not figure out that i am being irritating.

i was at the lake louise winter institute of physics (some sort of conference where my boss is speaking) with my entire physics class. the TA was giving a discussion section and i kept rudely interrupting him with lame sufjan stevens references, e.g.:
TA: so if we set the buoyant force equal to the force of gravity--
me: sufjan STEVENS isn't afraid of nichols park!
TA: uh, then, we can define U to be the rise speed of the bubble...
[five minutes later]
TA: so N here is a function of r, and--
me: sufjan STEVENS hesitates to burn the buildings!!!!
TA: uh-hm.

except the references were more plausible/related to what he was saying.
i thought they were very clever, really.
this happened at least four times.
i was disappointed that my jokes kept bombing.

i was in Deal$ Under A Dollar with annie and nick. details are shaky but from what i remember,
me: it's like the barenaked ladies. they're great, but they're also suitable elevator music
annie: [fumes silently]
me: [to nick] or it's like TMBG in 1988. you would know--Flansburgh looked a lot like you in 1988.
nick: [extremely put off]
