my telephone in ohio has a one-foot-tall plastic base shaped like Snoopy
i'm sleeping with the lights on in my street clothes on the floor of my bedroom in ohio until the telephone wakes me up. it's a friend from high school about whom i care a lot but with whom i don't keep in good touch, definitely not someone who'd normally call me about something like this: he's worried that his girlfriend won't marry him if she finds out about his giant collection of star wars stuff. (it's not like he still actively uses it, he just hasn't gotten rid of it.) i tell him she's much too cool to care about something like that. he seems more or less reassured and we hang up; i go back to sleep.
in the morning, despite having woken up in chicago and not having this friend's phone number, i carefully check my cell phone to make sure i didn't actually call him and have my half of the conversation.
